Genealogy Club: Using City Directories

City directories are precursors to today’s telephone directories and can fill in the blanks between census records. They can also provide more than just a name and an address. Sometimes, they may indicate a person’s occupation, marital status, ward maps, church addresses and much more. City directories may be the key to helping you find that “missing” ancestor. Headed by Harlem Renaissance poet Arna Bontemps and white proletarian writer Jack Conroy, The Negro in Illinois employed major black writers living in Chicago. Kathryn Barrett, a National Archives volunteer for over 35 years, will be presenting her program on the Civilian Conservation Corps. One of President Roosevelt’s more successful New Deal programs during the Great Depression, the CCC was a voluntary public work relief program that operated from 1933 to 1942 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried, men ages 18–25 and eventually expanded to ages 17–28.
